documentary “Life in the Shores of Death”

The Story….. Life in the Shores of Death,

Natural disasters like cyclones and floods are a major concern for Bangladesh. With this in mind, a group of university students along with their teacher investigated the concept of “disaster” among residents of the country’s coastal belt.  They visited the disaster-prone communities of Mirzagonj (devastated by the Cyclone Aila) and Pathorghata (affected by the Cyclone Sidr). During  their journey, they meet resilient people who not only survived nature’s fury but also surmounted it. This interaction between students and the community people created a dialogue filled with tales of awe, vulnerability, loss, agony, strength, faith, inspiration and unity.

documentary Life in the Shores of Death,

–        We didn’t only filmed our self (like the Performative mode),

–        We took this medium as a reflective social movement (in concept of sustainable living);

–        We did not represent any topic without a context (what filmmaker do in Observational mode);

–        We did not put our self as an author of All (Expository is not our vision);

–        We learned every moments through the documentary (intelligently moderated);

–        We shared all feelings, all experiences & all difficulties (quite reflexive).

We believe there is much to tell a story with the relationship of cultural text and social change. This is an activist documentary. We did not hide regarding our self, our intention, our purpose or the intention of institution that we worked for. Probably this will be the future of the ideological commitment of a documentary; here filmmaker will not only tells a story, he/she believes the story with an interaction of environment.  In theory we called our self a case. Life in the Shores of Death is a Case of exploiting the topic Disaster Risk Reduction in rural context by a group of students along with their instructor’s life changing experience.

The festival will screen the ULAB MSJ Production on 14 January 2012 at Begum Sufia Kamal Auditorium of National Museum, Dhaka, Bangladesh.

The synopsis is as follows: Natural disasters like cyclones and floods are a major concern for Bangladesh.

Razibul Hossain describes “Life in the Shores of Death as a case where Community based Disaster Risk Reduction has created life changing experiences for students along with their instructor. The documentary is unique since the filmmakers did not just tell a story; instead the filmmakers became part of the story.”

Last Week I have a very interesting conversation with my friend about his profile status comments & I need 2 share with u all. I believe it is important 2 have it an open ground.

(for ur acknowledgment, Humayun Farid was my formal academic friend, A young filmmaker, ex graduate of University of Jahangirnagar (Bangladesh), recently awarded MA in Moving Image from the University of Glamorgan, UK. Now working for BBC as a Trainee Assistant Producer)

Humayun Farid
Last week I met someone (British Bangladeshi). He is a producer. He wants me to make films like BEDER MEYE in Bangladesh. A lot of people have got money but not the sense!

“Beder Meye” is a 1969 film directed by Nurul Haq Bachchu, *ing Sujata, Azim & others. This badly produced film was based on Poet Jasimuddin’s famous play. “Beder Meye Josna” is different one.

Nothing to shame. We have many good … great films. But dear Razi… is it so that every ringing sound is music? every drop of color is painting? every written or composed or printed word is poetry? Someday somebody can tell you “every readable sentence is a novel…”, will you believe it?
nd dont shame with ur own film critic.

What have u heard…Beder Meye Josna is not a film nd Nostalgia is a film….don’t believe on that (western) education, believe on ur instinct. don’t forget u came 4m a country where u never decides what is right or wrong. make ur own film 4 ur people not 4 that.. (western) people.

I respect your thinking Rajon. You are quite interesting from the university life indeed. Though I haven’t seen any of your digital films but I hope they should be fine. I fully agree to that line where you wrote”don’t forget u came 4m a country where u never decides what is right or wrong” but most probably our personal film thinking is a bit different… I won’t mind blending Eastern instincts with Western style & technologies!

Thanks Humayun, 4 finding me “an interesting person,” I took it as a criticism.

” Who decide what is film or not” is a political question 4 me, not personal. who is playing da game is also a part of it. da reason i comments on ur status was.. u neglected some one personally… who might not have been known or informed about ur expression. nd dat attitude was not da right one….second point was, u compare a big commercial blockbuster pioneer movie “Beder Meye Josna” with ur civil (or foreign ?!) film sense !

Did u go 2 see film in da theater @ BD? da people in BD who see da movies, who make da movies great…never underestimate their likes or dislikes. if u wanna be a filmmaker u should make films 4 da audiences not 2 keep it on ur pocket 2 play hide nd sick. … Read More

best wishes 4 u nd ur film. keep ur own instinct nd style in da film. about da technologies… as u don’t create it (u r da user) keep trying 2 express (ur thoughts) anything u get.tc.Beder Meye Josna (Bengali: বেদের মেয়ে জোসনা) movie poster
